One of the RDCMan qualities I am missing more was that it was so easy to learn, that it would take me at most 10 minutes to explain it to a business user or a tester, and off they went using it productively. RDCMan was doing one thing, RDP connection to multiple computers, and it was doing it very well, very fast and very reliably. RDCMan was a nifty little tool providing a solution for those users. The main users I have in mind are single one man bands, very small IT teams, non technical users, testers, developers, devops, people who have to login to 2 to 20 computers a day, from a set of 20 to 200 available computers. I expect a few RDCMan users may have moved in that space, but I would argue that the greatest majority of RDCMan users wouldn't have been a perfect fit for those solutions. Beyond that, it becomes cumbersome, and again, it doesn't support the simultaneous session kick start in multiple computers.įor large number of VMs, in the hundreds if not in the thousands, there are a number of proprietary and relatively inexpensive solutions, with centralised management of their configuration backed by databases. RD is slightly better, I do advise it as a replacement to people who have to login to 1 to 3 computers. Remote Desktop (RD) Connection Manager allows easy working with remote desktops and servers. To configure RDC to enable this scenario is a nightmare, one ends up with tens of *.rdp files distributed across a folder structure, but again, the experience or "right click and login in 50 computers" is basically impossible. Download Remote Desktop (RD) Connection Manager for free. RDCMan allows a single user to login in parallel to tens of computers. The problem with this recommendation is that the scenarios for RDCMan do not match well with neither RDC nor RD. Current target computers have win7 Operating system. Microsoft is now recommending to replace RDCMan with either the built-in Remote Desktop Client (RDC or MSTSC) or the new universal Remote Desktop client (RD). The proximate cause was a security vulnerability, CVE-2020-0765, but it is likely the security vulnerability acted as a woke up call, given that the tool apparently had not been updated since 2014. Microsoft has provided a tool called Remote Desktop Connection Manager (RDCMan) for longer than a decade, but unfortunately in March 2020 they decided to discontinue it.
